Singing for the title

Singing for the title

Only 10 young Hoosiers remain in the hopes of becoming the next Indiana State Fair Vocal Throwdown Champion and, in my opinion, Conner Chamberlin is sure to give the rest of the finalists a run for their money.  Chamberlin is one of five competitors vying for the title in the 16 to 21 year old division and I had the chance to chat with him after his preliminary competition.

AP: So tell me a little bit about yourself.

Conner Chamberlin: I’m 20 years old and from Indianapolis.  I’ll be a junior at IUPUI this fall.  Majoring in Communications.

AP: Awesome.  How did you get involved with singing?

CC:  I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, probably sang before I could talk.  But I sang in my school choir since sixth grade.

AP: Wow, that’s a long time.  It’s seems like you have some really good stage presence, have you done competitions like Vocal Throwdown before?

CC:  I have never entered a singing competition before but I was a dancer for 10 years and was involved with musical theatre so I am familiar with onstage performances.

AP:  It definitely shows!  You sang “Happy” by Pharrell Williams during your audition video, right?  How did you get to advance on to the preliminaries?

CC:  Yes I did.  I advanced on because I was one of the competitors with the highest amount of votes.  I’ve had great support from my family and friends, so that helped a lot.

AP: Of course. Now that the judges have advanced you to the finals with your performance of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder during the preliminaries last Saturday, what are you looking forward to during the finals?

CC:  I’m excited to hear with all the other contestants are singing and just for the competition itself!

AP:  Well good luck Conner! I will be rooting for you!

Check out Conner at the preliminaries!
